Greetings, the 2012 spring awakening is upon us.

Its time to defrost the engines and get active! Lately, we have seen a great deal of effort put towards unmasking the illegal home foreclosure ring currently being run in Santa Barbara and around the nation. We urge you to check up on our Home Foreclosure Task Force and join us in more exciting actions over the coming days and months.

We continue to encourage all citizens of Santa Barbara who believe their First Amendment rights have been violated by the selective and heavy handed policies of our police department to join the lawsuit. There will be a meeting for everybody who received a citation and/or was arrested in relation to the occupy movement and all plaintiffs currently on the civil suit and those that would like to be added to it.

If your rights were violated during this period join the suit and attend the meeting with Attorney Joseph Allen, 5PM Thursday April 26, 5pm 131 E. Anapamu at Joseph Allen’s Office.

Take Action

Historically, May 1′st is a day of action for workers and citizens alike. We urge you to join us and choose from one or more of the following activities we will be hosting and endorsing in our area. (Location is De la Guerra Plaza unless otherwise specified)

Noon May Day starts in your neighborhood - Meet up with your friends and neighbors and gear up with signs, flags, drums, guitars and march down to the waterfront’s famed Dolphin Fountain, located at State Street and Cabrillo. Be there by 12:30pm.

After our rendezvous, we’ll move as one group to De La Guerra Plaza for a picnic where we’ll collaborate about our shared future goals for social, economic, and environmental justice. There won’t be food waiting, so be sure to pack what you’d like back home and bring it along.

Furthermore, this event will serve to demonstrate the power of our local working class and immigrant families by declaring concrete demands of both the local City Council as well as the District Supervisors, SBPD, & Sheriff’s Department. Demands include:

Everyone who can is encouraged to meet across from the Coffee Cat at Anacapa & Anapamu at 9:30AM in front of the SB County Administration building. We are going to deliver evidence of illegal foreclosures here in our own community to the County Recorder, Sheriff, and District Attorney.

Michael W. – Karpeles Library event report back. Speakers lined/are lining up and graphic design going to soon be completed.

Marshall – Media Working Group soon to be designing new website per the design templates that were passed around the General Assembly. Media WG will be meeting at 6:30pm on Monday’s at Jitter’s and anyone is welcomed.

William – Facilitation Working Group is meeting at 11:30AM Saturdays on the steps of City Hall and there will be facilitation training after the Saturday General Assemblies.

Announcements:

Michael M. – Keep an eye out for a civil rights group to soon be trying to work with Occupies across the country against voter ID acts.

Marshall - Encourages everyone to check out the Occupy805 wordpress site for more information regarding events in the area. There were a number of events planned through March from SB to Ventura to Thousand Oaks. Occupy805 also maintains a Facebook Page.

Sharon – Check out Evolve Santa Barbara. Sharon believes that that they have similarities with some of Occupy’s core themes and is going to be meeting with some of their folks on Saturday.

Sharon – Green Party candidate made announcement for MoveToAmend.org 50 state strategy. [Found a video of David Cobb who is a former candidate for the GP talking about corporate person-hood].

Mary – Invisible Children, a non-profit group, made a 29-minute video to further expose the practices of Ugandan guerilla leader Joseph Rao Kony, head of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The video has since gone viral under the Twitter hashtag #StopKony. [As of today the video (03/09/2012) has over 50 million views]

Matt – Please be aware of HR 347—the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011. This act empowers the government to prosecute anyone who knowingly, and without legal permission, enters “(1) the White House or its grounds or the Vice President’s official residence or its grounds, (2) a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting, or (3) a building or grounds so restricted due to a special event of national significance.” It has been termed the Anti-Occupy Act by some.

Proposal #1, by Facilitation & Structure Working Group, Nico presenting. (tabled until 03/10/2012 GA)

Occupy SB will authorize a study to determine the feasibility of creating an affinity group space. Will allow a spokescouncil, increases participation, numbers and democratic participation.

Even though the Occupy Santa Barbara General Assembly has been using a basic Meeting Structure it has never formally consented to a Formal Meeting Structure.

Therefore, the Facilitation & Structure Working Group Proposes that the Occupy Santa Barbara General Assembly authorize the adoption of the attached and distributed Formal Meeting Structure.

The full proposal can be viewed here.

1st Amendment (Accepted): Time should be allotted for clarifying questions during Announcements and Report Backs. The Facilitator would make the determination on the time limit for clarifying questions.

2nd Amendment (Accepted): Schedule open discussion/think tank time prior to Saturday General Assemblies. This open discussion will be informal with the possibility of a stack taker, but not facilitator. The time for this informal discussion/think tank time will be 12:30-2:00PM on Saturdays prior to the General Assemblies in De La Guerra Plaza.

3rd Amendment (Not Accepted): Declare at the beginning of each General Assembly that this is a “Business-only” meeting to discourage distracting discussions. Not accepted due to some people’s dislike of the term “Business” and other suggested “We’re here for the productivity of Occupy”.

4th Amendment (Accepted): When announcements are made the facilitator should reiterate the announcers to use “What, when, where, who, why, & how”.

Suggestions to better work through the amendment consensus process and to reword some of the proposal. Facilitation & Structure Working Group will work on the proposal and return to the GA.

End of GA.

Greetings fellow citizens! It has been an amazing 5 months of local activism in our city of Santa Barbara. Beginning in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protests and continuing the tradition of the Greek, Spanish, and Egyptian “indignados (occupy)” movement, we have all worked tirelessly for the International struggle of justice and democracy. That said, our struggle is far from over. We are asking everyone to step up to the plate and become more active within this community and movement.

As you may have seen in the local press recently our suit against the City of Santa Barbara is strong and the arguments compelling. The City Attorney is already relinquishing all citations issued in their illegal selective enforcement rampage during the first weeks of our occupation. We encourage all citizens of Santa Barbara who believe their first amendment rights have been violated by the selective and heavy handed policies of our police department to join the lawsuit. Eight stalwart activists have spearheaded this initiative and now need your support.

If your rights were violated during this period join the suit and attend the meeting with Attorney Joseph Allen, 4PM Thursday March 1st. Location – 131 E. Anapamu St.

Monitor our notices and show up to support the activists during their court dates.

Donate resources to the general fund by sending a check to The Fund for Santa Barbara with OccupySB clearly marked in the memo line.

For the latest developments and to become part of the process and community everyone is encouraged to attend the General Assemblies. There are two scheduled assemblies a week.

Wednesday – 6PM Ayni Gallery 216 State St. (upcoming Feb. 29th)

Saturday – 2PM De la Guerra Plaza

Much acknowledgement and appreciation to everyone who has participated and donated so much time and effort to this local grassroots movement.
